Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was convicted of financing a dog fighting ring at his home in  Atlanta in 2007. In 2001 Vick and three friends started the “Bad Newz Kennels”, shortly after Vick, the number one draft pick, signed with the Falcons. There were 51 pit bulls taken from the property.

In most states, pit bulls seized from dog fighting rings are euthanized because they are too dangerous to be adopted as pets. All the dogs taken from Bad Newz Kennels were traumatized, mistreated, neglected and abused. There were also dead dogs on the property. A judge decided to spare these dogs immediate death and allowed for them to be placed in different facilities for evaluation. Of the 51 dogs taken from Vick’s kennel, 2 died while at a shelter, 1 was put down because it was to violent and one was too sick and injured and was euthanized. Many experts feel that fighting dogs can never be safely made into family pets, but the people working with Michael Vick’s pit bulls have no doubt some of these dogs can be saved.

For many of these dogs, the problem has not be the dog’s aggression, but the fearfulness, and nervousness of the dogs. There was no positive socialization, the only way the dogs related to other dogs was as opponents meant to fight to the death. The foster care givers and adoptive families have found that these former fighting dogs have no idea how to relate as a family member.

Pit bulls or American Pit Bul bul Bull Terri terriers > were actually a favorite family pet for many years. They were known as the “nanny dog” because of the way they were with the children in the family. They were extremely trustworthy and safe around children.

Pit bulls have recently gained popularity with street gangs. The dogs are a kind of status symbol. Gangs use the dogs as a way to threaten and intimidate people. It may be illegal to walk around with a gun or knife, but it is not illegal to walk around with a dog. Gangs also use the dogs to protect their turf and their property. It became more important to have the biggest, meanest, most vicious dog on the street.  Breeding was done to produce this result, making pit bulls a dangerous, no longer a family friendly breed. Dog fighting became a way for street gangs to make more money, so it turned into a gambling operation which is big business. This was no doubt the reason Michael Vick and his friends got involved.

After hearing the graphic details of what was done to Michael Vick’s dogs, the way they were beaten and killed. Many people felt strongly that he should do serious jail time and never be allowed to play professional football again. Michael Vick did 18 months of a 23 month sentence in prison and was required to pay over $900,000.00 for the care and rehabilitation of the dogs seized from his property.

This past week, it was announced that Michael Vick signed a two year contract to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. The buzz word around the decision has been “second chance”. Many fans feel like Vick did his time and paid for his crime so he should be allowed to play football again. Just as many fans say Vick should never be allowed to play again, and have even stated that they will no longer be Eagles fans. There is a huge uproar in the city about the decision. Vacationing with your furry four legged friend is a lot of fun for both of you.  Most dogs love t o travel and are great company on long drives.  Without planning and organization however, it could end up a huge disaster.  Here are some tips to help you and your dog have a safe and fun journey.

Safety in the car is as important for dogs as it is for people. It’s not a good idea to have them free and hopping about in the back seat, or sitting in the driver’s or even a passenger’s lap is just as dangerous.  Even though every dog loves it because of the smells, letting them hang their head out of the window is also extremely dangerous.  There are harness style restraints that buckle directly to the shoulder part of a standard seat belt for medium and large dogs.  The harnesses are designed to allow some movement but still prevent injury during a sudden stop or an accident.  Smaller dogs are best placed in a travel carrier.  The carrier is then buckled into the seat belt in the same way as a baby seat.

If your dog is not used to riding in a car, or doesn’t usually ride for long distances, this is the perfect place to start.  Puppies, and even adult dogs, can suffer from car sickness.  To get them adjusted, take them for longer and longer rides, and make sure there is something fun at the end, like a romp in the park or even a visit with a friend or family member they don’t see on a regular basis.  This helps the dog think of the ride itself as a reward.

As you plan your trip, don’t forget to plan extra stops for your pet’s potty breaks, leg stretching and even a drink of water.  You are able to eat or drink along the way without stopping, but your dog is not that fortunate.  A water bowl will slosh and spill with the movement of the car.  Even the ones made for travel are not spill proof.  Allow enough time during these stops for doggie to romp and run as well as go potty.  Highly active dogs need longer and more frequent stops than a less active dog.  Too much time between breaks can cause any dog to become bored or stressed.  when planning your trip, maybe a few short side trips to a park or other site where not only can your dog get some exercise, but you and your family can have a picnic and a bit of a break, too.

Booking hotels in advance insure that your dog will be accepted at that particular hotel or motel.  Not all breeds are welcome everywhere.  Whether a community restriction or ban, or just that the motel owner doesn’t like large dogs is not what’s important.  What’s important is that your dog will be as comfortable inside as you are.  Also, there may be an added charge for your dog, and don’t forget to make sure they have potty stations.  Many hotels and motels are extremely pet friendly, and have great little parks for your dog’s business, and room enough to play and run.

Does the Dog’s Breed Matter?

This is a controversial issue. There are some who believe quite strongly that certain breeds have innate traits of aggression that make them more likely to inflict harm on human beings than other types of breeds. Opponents of this view state that a dog’s propensity for aggressive behavior is dictated primarily by the dog’s owner or handler and how that dog was trained and cared for early in its life.

On the one hand, there are certain breeds that appear to have a higher incident rate of inflicting harm on people, including children. According to Merritt Clifton, editor of the newspaper publication Anima l People, the breeds of pit Bul bul Bull Terri terriers > Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes accounted for 74 percent of reported attacks from 1982 through 2005. Sixty-eight percent of those attacks involved children. Following these breeds, the next group representing the highest occurrence of attacks included German shepherds, chows, and Akitas. But the question remains whether these breeds were responsible because of some innate characteristic associated with the animal or because they were more likely to be groomed and trained by their owners to act in an aggressive manner.

Breed-Specific Legislation: aka Breed Ban Laws

A hot topic these days is the issue of breed-specific legislation, or sometimes called “breed ban laws.” There are some cities in various states that have enacted specific legislation against certain breeds. They include cities in the states of California, Colorado, and Ohio. In Washington, the city of Yakima has adopted an ordinance that completely bans the ownership of pit bulls and their mixes, wolf-hybrids, and others. I am also aware that the city of Seattle has informally considered the issue, but the city council has so far refused to address the topic formally due to the lack of consensus among experts and/or council members.

In 1987, the city of Yakima adopted an ordinance that banned dogs known to be pit bulls, and specifically included those breeds which included the Bull Terrier American pit Bull Terrier Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and those dogs having any identifiable pit bull variety as an element of their breeding. The new ordinance was in response to three vicious attacks by pit bull dogs on unsuspecting citizens in Yakima. Our Washington State Supreme Court ultimately upheld this ordinance as constitutional, despite the law’s effect of also banning those pit bull dogs deemed safe.

The Bullmastiff was specifically bred to bring down a man without biting him and hold him until his Master arrived. In the 1800s the estates of Great Britain suffered serious losses from “poaching” or the stealing of livestock and game and the Bullmastiff was bred to assist in eliminating poachers.
This is a big dog, with a big attitude, but was not bred to attack but rather to hold at bay. The original cross of bull dogs with mastiffs produced this tractable yet powerful breed. The foundation stock was 50% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. The common known term name for the breed early on was “The Game-keepers Night Dog”. At first this was a rather generic description for all the big dogs that patrolled the estates but gradually these original dogs were more selectively bred and became what is today known as the Bullmastiff.
The Bullmastiff should have a large, square head with some wrinkling of the brow, a short broad muzzle with a slight upturn to the nostrils and a neck as broad and square as the head, on equally broad powerful shoulders.
Unlike the Bulldog, the front legs should be straight. The chest should be deep and the back short, presenting a nearly square appearance to the body. The entire picture should be one of power and strength. The Bullmastiff is 24-27 inches at the withers, weighing between 110-130 pounds. The coat is short and dense, colors can be brindle, fawn, or red, with a black “mask” on the face. The Bullmastiff is somewhat shorter than a Mastiff and certainly stockier of build, a good Bullmastiff should be quite blocky in appearance, while a Mastiff is taller and rangier.
The Bullmastiff, like all large breeds, requires an owner with some knowledge of training and the willingness to socialize the puppy in its early life. As usual with any breed, a buyer who wishes to purchase a Bullmastiff puppy needs to be wary of irresponsible breeders who breed only for profit rather than a passion for the breed.
The Bullmastiff is not for everyone, a neat housekeeper will not be happy with the amount of drool that the dog can put out. The coat is easy care and the general health is basically good, there being few genetic problems, except for hip dysplasia which is always an important consideration and care should be taken that x-rays are done before breeding.
The Bullmastiff is a powerful large dog with a fearsome look but is in truth a gentle and trustworthy dog. They are not excitable, actually being rather docile and gentle. They are loving to children and protective without being overly aggressive. The Bullmastiff possesses a delightful sense of humor and they can be quite “clownish”. This is a dog that is very easy to train, desiring nothing more than to please its owner.
Perhaps because they were bred to hold a man at bay and not maul or kill, they have a sense of wisdom combined with their watchdog instincts and generally are quite intelligent and thoughtful in their response to strangers. They are good watchdogs and will accept strangers only when introduced properly by their masters and will seldom bite or attack, preferring to stand their ground and bark.
This is a breed that is not excitable by nature and they do the business of guarding quite efficiently, since their size combined with their bark is quite sufficient to deter unwanted visitors. This is a dog that is great for country life or suburban areas but they should always be fenced or on a leash, even when on a farm or ranch. They are territorial by nature and will police the entire property that they have access to.

When you are shopping for a dog bed for your dog, there are a few things that you need to avoid so that you can make an informed, intelligent purchase. Don’t buy the first dog bed that you see, take your time and shop around. If possible, bring your dog with you when you shop for a bed so that you can make sure that you get one that is large enough. Otherwise, keep handy these five common mistakes and take care to avoid them.
It is not chew proof
If you have a chewer and your bed is not chew proof, you may come home one day to a shredded doggie bed. Check the liner as well as the bed itself and see how durable they are. Some beds are chew proof and you can purchase new liners or use old blankets for the inside of the bed. Another consideration here is regarding chewing. You don’t want your dog chew his or her bed and get something stuck in their throat or choke. This is pretty unlikely, but there is always a possibility. It is better to be safe than sorry.
It is cheap
When you buy a cheap doggie bed, you usually get what you pay for. Chances are your cheap doggie bed won’t last long. You may do better to get a slightly more expensive or better made bed for your dog. With a better made dog bed, preferably by a name that you can trust, you know it will hold up well.
It is not the right size
You don’t want to get your bull dog a doggie bed that is made for a toy poodle and you don’t want to get your Chihuahua a doggie bed that is made for a Great Dane. The point here is, make sure that your doggie bed is the right size for your dog. Your dog should be able to comfortably turn around, curl up and stretch out in his or her bed. You do not, however, want to get a doggie bed that is too big for the dog either. If the dog feels lost in a huge bed, they may not want to stay in it. If you get a bed for a puppy, remember that puppies grow – fast! You may want to get a larger bed, but pile a comforter or blanket in it so that the puppy can make a nice little nest in which to sleep.
It is not washable
The last thing that you want is a doggie bed that you can not clean. You want a bed that is fully washable. Dog beds can become quite odiferous over time, plus, they can harbor fleas. Get a bed that you can wash the lining regularly and wipe down the bed itself if it is not able to be thrown in the washing machine. Use a mild solution of bleach and water to clean your dog’s bed. This is the best way to deodorize and disinfect the bed and bedding.
It does not suit your dog
Finally, make sure that the bed fits the dog. If the dog is warm natured, he will swelter in a bed lined with sheepskin. If your dog is cold natured she will freeze if you don’t throw in some blankets. The bottom line is when seeking a dog bed, think of the dog first. What is safe and what suits them best.

Choosing a Dog.
Dogs are cute cuddly and make great companions. Before you buy a dog make sure you choose the one that’s right for you, your lifestyle and your living space. Evaluate your lifestyle and family circumstances. Do you have small children? Are you active? What are your family hobbies and activities? Does anyone in your family have allergies?
Make a list of the qualities you want or need in a dog. Do you need a lap dog, guard dog, small or toy size or can you and your home accommodate a large dog? Do you want a dog with long fur that sheds and needs special grooming?
No dog is totally non allergic but some cause fewer allergies than others. Typically breeds that do not shed as much or that require frequent bathing are less allergic. Also, small dog breeds because they produce less saliva. Poodles and Poodle mixes are least allergic.
Once you have completed your list, go to the library or the AKC web site and check out information on all the different breeds of dogs until you find one that fits your family.
Purchase your dog from a responsible, ethical breeder who produces high quality, healthy dogs with stable temperament. The AKC has breeder referral contacts for each recognized breed.
Dog Breeds.
There are many breeds of dogs and they mainly fit into these AKC acknowledged groups;
The first is called the Sporting Group. These dogs are active, alert, likeable and make well rounded companions. They do require regular invigorating exercise. They include the Cocker Spaniel, Irish Setter and the Vizsla.
The second group are Hounds. These dogs are mostly used for hunting because of their scenting powers and stamina. Beware though because instead of barking some hounds produce a deep baying sound. Hounds include the Basset Hound, Beagle and Blood Hound.
Third are Working Dogs. They have mostly been bred to guard, pull sleds or rescue. They are quick to learn, intelligent, capable and make solid companions. Their size and strength can make them unsuitable for children. These dogs must be properly trained. They include the Boxer, Great Dane and Rottweiler.
Fourth are Terriers. They are feisty, energetic and range in size from very small to medium sized. Most were bred to hunt. They can have wiry coats that require special grooming. They also require owners with determination to match their lively spirits. This group includes breeds such as the Cairn Terrier and Miniature Schnauzer.
Fifth is the Toy Group. They are diminutive in size but very expressive. They are very popular for people with small living spaces. It is easier to control and care for smaller dogs, though they can have long coats that need special care. They include the Chihuahua, Pug and Pomeranian.
Sixth is the Non Sporting Group. This is a diverse group of sturdy dogs with different personalities, sizes, coats and appearances. It includes breeds such as the Dalmatian, Bull Dog and Chow.
Seventh is the Herding Group. This is the newest class and is composed of dogs that used to belong to the Working Group. They share the ability to control the movement of other animals. They are intelligent, make excellent companions and respond well to training. It includes breeds like the Collie, German Shepherd and Old English Sheep Dog.

Has your dog been left to sleep on the floor every night? Thats so totally uncomfortable, and you should know that by investing in a large dog bed, your dog will soon be sleeping as peacefully and comfortably as you. Your dog works hard every day to dig holes in your backyard for you to fill up, pulling food off of the table behind your back, and stealing your favorite T.V chair from you when its time for your dog to watch some T.V. after a hard days work of digging holes, stealing food, and robbing chairs for T.V time (dogs have their favorite shows, too!) they deserve to have a warm and comfy dog bed waiting for them to flop lazily into when its bedtime (or naptime.)

As an owner of 1 large English Pointer (Bryan), and another large German Shorthaired Pointer (Elliott), I can tell you that they both have a large dog bed to rest comfortably in. They love it too, in fact 90% of the day you can find Bryan sleeping peacefully in his dog bed. The other 10% of the time you can either find him outside, digging a hole that could probably take you to the lost city of Atlantis, or inside stuffing his face during lunchtime (yes, our dogs have their meals made for them at lunchtime, and thats a whole different article right there.)

A large dog bed can accommodate all large dogs. As stated, we have a couple of Pointers, as well as a Chocolate Labrador (Hershey) who all have their own large dog beds, but there are other large dogs that will appreciate a large dog bed, such as Dalmatians, Bull Dogs, and Huskies.

Speaking of Huskies, we (me and my mom) took Bryan to the dog park one day (and if you have ever seen an English Pointer, they do not look ANYTHING like a Husky.) As we were walking around, and he was busy at play, we noticed a couple sitting on a bench, and they were identifying the different breeds of dogs to unsure people. We thought this was a good and engaging idea at least until Bryan walked past them, and they said, and I quote, Now that dog, thats a husky! We found it to be quite funny, and even though Bryan was totally insulted, he still went hard at play that day. When we brought him home from the dog park, he was very tired, so guess what he did? Thats right; he flopped down into his large dog bed!
